For months, they experimented with electronic sound equipment, mixing desks and cutting tables in a mattress crypt: a former cinema near Cologne, which was acoustically sealed with 1500 seaweed cushions from the German armed forces. Now, however, after their new long-playing record "Ege Bamyasi" (Turkish name for a vegetable type) was finished and a 60-minute colour film shot at a concert in Cologne in the spring was released for screening, the rock band "Can" once again pushed themselves in front of their audience. In 21 German cities, the five musicians, who also organize their own concert tours, wanted to turn up their 20 hundred watt loudspeaker boxes by the end of October; afterwards, an England tour with 20 concerts was planned. Last Wednesday, however, the "Can" guitarist Michael Karoli was hospitalized with a perforation of his stomach ulcer. Now the combo is looking for a prominent colleague band to take over their many commitments at short notice. "Can"-organist Irmin Schmidt: "We are paralyzed for the next months."
