Ton Steine Scherben

April im Oktober - Neue Welt in der Hasenheide

On October 22, 1976, an event took place in the rooms of the Neue Welt in Berlin's Hasenheide, which was later referred to as the first left-wing nostalgia event or veterans' meeting. The four founding groups of the Schneeball-label performed there together with the so-called Walde Theater. So two and a half years after the memorable "glitter gig", the Scherben were back on a Berlin stage. And again it was a support event to which the band had been called, and again they couldn't say no. In Berlin's Waldemarstraße, in Kreuzberg, there was a community of people who lived and worked together like the Scherben family. One member of this commune was Rolli. She had already met Kai at the end of 1969. [...] It was Rolli, who later had a daughter and got clean again, who brought the Scherben and the community from the Waldemarstraße into contact. The people there were very active, and there was already a leather workshop and a theater group. And now they wanted to open their own pub and needed some starting capital. There should be a real meeting place in Kreuzberg again. So that was the real reason for the event in the Neue Welt, and all groups played for free or at best got their expenses compensated. When the Walde Theater opened the event in front of a sold-out audience, the audience quickly became restless and started to whistle. The play was simply not designed for such a large audience, and there were also problems with communication. With a microphone in your hand and a long cable hanging from it, it's not easy to play theatre, not to mention the constant cable tangle. The Walde actors were clever enough to shorten their play drastically, and for the audience it was a relief when the Scherben finally played.
